Richland Township supervisors authorized the purchase of a 76-acre conservation easement for the Herrman property on Rich Hill Road.

 

The largest great blue heron rookery east of the Mississippi River is located on the east side of Quakertown in the Rich Hill Rd area. Quakertown, which was once known at “The Great Swamp”,  has the largest freshwater inland wetland in southeastern Pennsylvania and is home to a diverse plant and animal communities.

The 400+ acre swamp is home to a blue heron rookery and provides habitat for over 90 bird species.

The approved easement calls for the township and Conservancy to each pay half of the $682,500 appraisal, the township’s half will be paid out of its Open Space Fund.
